Your “Gift of Empowerment”
will help the women and children seeking a fresh start in our Residence
Amy Mann is an empowered woman who wanted to share her personal experience to give others hope who have been through a similar ordeal, that they too can turn their lives around. She is a 30-year-old mother and former drug addict who spent almost a year living at the YWCA with her little boy, Zackary, before moving on to a place of her own. During that time Amy says she became an empowered woman, taking charge of her life and turning it around.
Amy became addicted to drugs when she was 19 following an abusive relationship and then spent 10 years in and out of prison. When she lost custody of Zackary because of her addiction she pretty much gave up on life.
However, a judge convinced her to give it one more try, first by completing a drug treatment program and then finding a stable place to start her life over with her son.
Amy says after coming to the YW Residence she never looked back. From the word go, she says the staff provided the concerned support she needed to feel good about herself along with the services to become self-sufficient and move on to permanent housing.
Amy’s convinced if she had not come to live at the YW she would have lost custody once again of Zackary. As it is, she says her son gave her the motivation to continue and the YW gave her the stability and support she needed to succeed.
“I would probably be on the streets still getting high if it wasn’t for this little guy and for the people showing me I’m better than that.”
True to our Mission, YWCA Lancaster helped empower this woman to get her life back on track.
Amy is just one of thousands of women and children in need who have been empowered by our services.
